Brief Overview of The Literacy Council of Mercer County

In 1986, we formed the Greenville Literacy Council to teach basic reading, math and spelling skills to unemployed workers and other adults.  As we continued this outreach from year to year, we began to recognize that additional offerings should be added to our curricula:  English as a Second Language and preparation for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED).  We further expanded our program when we merged with the Adult Literacy Project of Sharon in 1994.  At that point, we formed The Literacy Council of Mercer County.

At The Literacy Council of Mercer County, we continue to offer basic education tutoring and classes to Mercer County adults whose basic education skills are below par.  We also offer family literacy instruction to parents of pre-school children

Our plans for the next three years include:  1) providing instruction for home-bound adults who need better reading skills or a GED; 2) providing child-care for children while their parents are in classes or tutoring sessions; 3) creating accessible centers in the most rural areas of Mercer County.
