- How do I enroll in classes?
Classes are taught in 8 to 9 week cycles. Enrollment is easy. Call The Literacy Council at 724-588-6141 to schedule an intake. At that time information about you will be gathered including assessments of your current reading, math, and writing levels. You will be scheduled for the next available opening at the class site nearest you. - Is there a charge for your services?
There is no charge for Literacy Council services including our Even Start program - pre-school for children from birth to 7 years old and adult education for their parents. Transportation for Even Start is also provided free of charge. Books and materials are provided. There is a charge for the state administered GED examination. A list of sites and times when the GED is administered is provided as well as the fee schedule. - How long will it take to get my GED?
The time varies for each learner based on- their entrance level in each of the GED areas; their class attendance;
- the time and effort each learner is able to devote both in-class and in independent study. Each student has an individual learning plan, and the instructor reviews progress with them frequently.
- What if I can’t attend one of the scheduled classes?
Several options are available to you including on-line instruction from your home guided by certified instructors and monitored through assessments of progress. Again, all materials are provided. If a student does not have access to a computer, books and lessons are mailed to them, and their work is mailed back to the instructor for monitoring. All material, including mailing envelopes, are provided.
One-on-one tutoring is also available at times convenient to both tutor and learner. - What are the classes like?
Classes are small - ranging from 8 to 25 students. All are adults, aged late teens all the way up to mid-seventies. Classes include group lessons, individual instruction, speakers and field trips. The mastery of skills needed to obtain and retain employment are emphasized. Entrance requirements for colleges and trade schools are explored, based on the student’s interest.
