Chili Cook-Off
Chili Cook Off
For the past six years, The Literacy Council of Mercer County has sponsored a Chili Cook Off. The event is normally held during the month ( usually March) that the Mercer County Commissioners designate as Mercer County Literacy Awareness Month. At the Cook Off, home cooks, restaurants and organizations vie for the title of Judges’ Choice, Best Restaurant, Best Organization, and the People’s Choice. There is also a prize for the best decorated chili booth.
This year (2010), we held the Chili Cook Off in collaboration with our organization partners from the Moose Riders at the Greenville Moose Lodge on Shenango Street. We had 21 cooks. Some were from Mercer County restaurants, some represented various organizations in Mercer County. We also had a large number of Mercer County home cooks. In fact, it was a home cook who won the Judges Choice this year. Our judges included a professional chili judge, a professional cook and a proficient home cook. Our winners were:
- Phil Godfrey, Judges Choice
- Cianci Restaurant, Best Restaurant
- Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Best Organization
- Steph’s Restaurant. The People’s Choice
- Jenny Rimko, Best Decorated Chili Booth
The Literacy Council of Mercer County thanks the Moose Riders and other members of the Greenville Moose Lodge who partnered with us in presenting the Chili Cook-off. We also thank our corporation sponsors, who included:
- Thrivent Financial for Lutherans
- Sharon Regional Hospital
- University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)
- Salem Tube
- Greenville Savings and Loan
- PNC Bank.
Thank you for making this the most successful fund raiser we have had in the 24 years of our history.
